Making the most of an afternoon off

Today was great. I usually have MLK Day off, but today I worked a half day to host an awesome group of volunteers to paint our new Mentoring program space at work. I got home at 1:30, Sara got home at 2:30, and we had a great afternoon with the boys. On the spur of the moment, we loaded into the van with Lolli and drove to a forest preserve about 3 miles west of us.

It was the first time we’ve gone there…I don’t think it will be the last. It was such a nice oasis from the city. As we pulled in, we saw a doe running from the road and a big buck standing near the road, eating something. (We got super close in the van…I think Sara will be posting a shot of the buck on her blog…) We parked, got out of the van, and hiked a trail for 20 minutes or so. Caleb was totally in his element…he didn’t want to go back to the van when the rest of us were ready to head back. At one point, we wandered out into a big field and had an impromptu snowball fight. It was pretty priceless.
